Ayr State High School Multipurpose Hall

Ayr, Far North Queensland

The Ayr SHS Multipurpose Hall is a contemporary and flexible education facility designed to integrate seamlessly with the existing campus while supporting future growth. Centred around a multi-use sports hall, the elevated design incorporates adaptable learning and recreational spaces, strong pedestrian connectivity, natural ventilation, and CPTED-informed safety principles to create a resilient and student-focused environment.

Situated in the rural town of Ayr, the new Ayr SHS Multipurpose Hall is designed to seamlessly integrate with the existing campus while offering versatile space utilization. The project aimed to create a contemporary building that complements the current campus layout and accommodates future expansion within a constrained complex of individual buildings.

CA Architects worked with the Department of Education to develop master planning principles ensuring the new facility is well-integrated with the existing campus. The multi-purpose hall is strategically located adjacent to the sports fields, with connections to the tennis and basketball courts and Block K.

Orientated around a central sports hall, the simple, but highly flexible building plan includes a gym, store rooms, multi-purpose rooms, change rooms and amenities, as well as staff rooms, kitchens and a kiosk. Tiered seating extends out from the main hall to allow spectator viewing of the adjacent field sports.

Elevated to prevent flooding, the design incorporates thoughtful urban planning with ramping, landscaping, and clear pedestrian and building access. The ground-level facade features a large sliding screen for natural ventilation and security, enhancing safety and transparency in line with CPTED principles. This approach ensures a secure, comfortable, and adaptable environment for students, with efficient access and future flexibility.
