Mackay, Central Queensland
“Our Vision is to create an active place that brings the community together to learn, to play and to celebrate” – Mackay Regional Council Project Vision.
This precinct will foster a rich array of opportunities and experiences, promoting community interaction and engagement, thereby establishing the Hub as the vibrant nucleus of the Northern Beaches.
The NBCH design strategy has evolved from a response to the local climate, context and community drivers. The building is intended to be expressive of response to environmental conditions. The planning strategies are linked to the climatic strategies.
The court pavilion as an open building clearly is naturally ventilated. Considerations have been made to provide protection from driving rain at the south east by positioning of the amenities pod and screening wall.
High louvre translucent panelling provides additional driving rain protection on four sides.
Shaded and sheltered connection between the Community Hub building and the Court pavilion is provided by a roof climbing at the rake of the ramp, which allows for a simple connection when the Community Hub is delivered in a second stage.
An awning on the west of the pavilion provides shaded space for viewing into the court and the Town Square outside of the court run off area.
