Cairns Hospital Emergency Department Expansion

Cairns, Far North Queensland

The Cairns Hospital Emergency Department refurbishment aims to improve clinical safety, patient flow, and capacity to meet rising demand. Key upgrades include increased isolation capacity, enhanced resuscitation areas, and additional treatment bays, with staged works designed to minimise disruption to ongoing ED operations.

The Emergency Department (ED) at Cairns Hospital has been subject to ongoing pressure to manage growing patient demand.

The primary objectives of the refurbishment are to enhance clinical safety, improve patient flow and increase capacity within the current ED.

Priority is given to refurbishment works which will enhance clinical safety through increased isolation capacity, provide flexibility to meet changing demands, deliver additional beds in a timely and costly manner and improve AusHFG compliance and functionality within resuscitation areas. All works need to ensure that disruption to the ongoing operations of the ED is minimised.

A shell space in block D will allow for expansion of the adult acute treatment zone negative-pressure isolation and multi-purpose resuscitation capable rooms, treatment bays and asociated uses. Refurbishment of the existing ED includes staged reconfiguration of various areas to allow for seamless operation.
